Poxymusic and Morganics
Posted: March 28, 2004 Filed under: BLOG | Tags: dance music, morganics, music, poxymusic, sydney music scene Comments OffI mentioned how I was blown away by Poxymusic (aka. Pocket + Ken Cloud) at Big Day Out, and last night I saw them in a totally different context: that is the land of the pointy toed heels and $200 metrosexual haircuts of Kink @ Arthouse. Never mind the place or the crowd, Poxymusic still kick ass. The masters of remixes they turn bland songs into itchingly lovely techy-breaks with their indelible poxymusic stamp. Their version of Ferry Corsten’s Rock Your Body is well on the way of becoming a breaks DJ’s staple, alongside their joint version with Kid Kenobi of Green Velvet’s La-La-Land having already been. They’re quite amusing to watch, what with Pocket jumping up and down like a rabbit stuck on fast forward while Ken Cloud mans the laptop with a face that embodies serene contentment.
Must make a mention of Morganics too who I caught at the Toasted festival (see blog). This man is like all the best of what localised hip hop can offer rolled into one. He not only acknowledges Australia’s multiculturalism with a range of diverse themes and languages in his raps he actively uses hip hop as a tool for cultural reformation by running community projects and workshops in poor urban and rural areas (you can hear the results on his new double album). His shows are part stand up comedy, performance art, physical theatre and hip hop. Yesterday his fine ability as a beatboxer and MC was precluded by a taste of his breaker skills! He’s performing at The Sydney Opera House theatre this week – so go check him!
Toasted @ 64 Pine St Chippendale
Posted: March 28, 2004 Filed under: BLOG | Tags: festivals, toasted Comments OffI love artsy leftie stuff. I love local free festivals. I love the weird eclectic groups of people you get at these gathering. So many of the things I say and love I would have rolled my eyes at years ago – but now I really understand their worth (and utmost importance) in the kind of world we live in.
And I loved Toasted yesterday where I got to see spoken word, break dancing, mccing, live music, capioera demonstrations and artworks (and there were heaps of things I missed.) For those of you who don’t know, 64 Pine St is this wicked little arts centre for youths around the Chippendale/Redfern area. And this festival was just this fantastic showcase of what we need more of in this world: independent fresh artists doing their thing – not for glory or for money but for love of self expression. Dig it?
Resfest: film festival of music clips
Posted: March 24, 2004 Filed under: BLOG | Tags: festivals, film, resfest Comments OffDid you go? Went to the “rock” one and saw some amazing clips. Watching music clips in a cinema as an interesting experience. In film we’ve been taught to focus on the visual rather than the sound (which, while an amazing narrative tool rarely determines the image) – so what happens when this flips around and the visuals have been determined by the music?
Well, we all know that clips are short, often erratic and with little narrative flow, so while visually exciting can be a little bit straining what with all that movement and colour. The other thing is that I’m use to seeing all these things on the small screen, and I’m use to really listening to the song while keeping a lazy eye on the telly. Well that’s not how we’re trained in cinemas, so I went into film mode…and some things that were just amazing on the small screen don’t work as well on the big.
Still, its an interesting idea – keep em coming Resfest!
Ps. Can beatmix two different tracks…
